AI SEO Beyond Your Website: Mapping the Sources AI Trusts About Your Brand

AI SEO Beyond Your Website: Mapping the Sources AI Trusts About Your Brand

3 min read

Ask an AI assistant about your company and it may never consult your website. It can lean on a YouTube video, a Reddit thread, a review platform or a Wikipedia entry. That makes the off-site half of AI SEO a distinct discipline, one where shortcuts are tempting and risky.

The short answer: find out which outside sources each AI engine actually cites in your category, earn a genuine presence on the ones that fit your business, and treat paid or manufactured mentions as a liability.

Each Engine Has Its Own Reading List

Peec’s analysis of 30 million US sources, published in March 2026, ranks the most-cited domains per engine. The page gives rankings, not percentage shares, so treat it as a map of tendencies.

  • Google AI Mode: YouTube, Reddit, Facebook, LinkedIn, Yelp
  • Google AI Overviews: YouTube, Reddit, Facebook, LinkedIn, Medium
  • Gemini: Reddit, YouTube, Wikipedia, Medium, PCMag or Forbes
  • Perplexity: Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, Wikipedia, G2
  • ChatGPT: Wikipedia, Reddit, Forbes, Techradar, LinkedIn

Reddit and YouTube appear in every list. Beyond that, the engines diverge: Google’s surfaces lean toward social platforms, ChatGPT toward editorial outlets, and Wikipedia ranks high for three engines but not for either Google surface. One detail shows how technical choices shape sources. Facebook blocks Perplexity’s bots in robots.txt, so it cannot feed Perplexity, though it still counts on Google.

The practical point: “get mentioned online” is too vague. Where you need to be depends on which assistant your customers use.

Mentions Correlate More Strongly Than Links

Ahrefs analyzed about 75,000 brands, published in May 2025, and compared a range of factors with brand appearances in Google AI Overviews. The strongest correlations were all off-site: branded web mentions (0.664), branded anchors (0.527) and branded search volume (0.392). Backlinks scored just 0.218. Brands in the top quartile for mentions averaged 169 AI Overview appearances, against 14 for the next quartile.

Read this carefully. The authors themselves state that correlation is not causation, and most of the measured relationships are moderate to weak. Famous brands attract both mentions and AI visibility, so mentions may partly be a symptom. The study is also over a year old and covers only Google’s AI Overviews. What it supports is modest: being widely discussed and being visible tend to go together.

Why You Should Not Buy Your Way In

Google’s Search Central documentation update of May 15, 2026 clarified that its spam policies apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. It says that seeking inauthentic mentions “isn’t as helpful as it might seem.” Coverage notes this adds no new rules, and that whether paid or reciprocal mentions are explicitly covered remains an open question. Detection of fake mentions is also harder than detecting unnatural links, so practical enforcement is uncertain.

Uncertain enforcement is not a green light. Reputation risk arrives sooner than a penalty does. eMarketer reported agencies charging from $2,500 a month for 35 to 100 Reddit brand mentions, and moderators responding with bans on promotional posts. The r/jewelry moderators warned members about “marketing disguised as positive posts” after a retailer advertised for a Reddit strategy manager. A discovered campaign damages trust in a place customers actually read.

The Source Map Audit

At Sarkar SEO, we start off-site work with a source map, because it replaces guesswork with evidence you can check this week.

  1. Write 10 real questions customers ask before buying in your category.
  2. Run each in the assistants your audience uses, several times, since answers vary.
  3. List every cited source, then sort each into one of six types: owned site, editorial press, community forum, review platform, reference site like Wikipedia, and video.
  4. Mark where competitors appear and you do not.
  5. Choose two or three source types you can serve honestly. Ignore the rest.

The result is a short, specific plan. A software company may find G2 and YouTube dominate, while a regional service business may find review sites and local press matter more.

The “Would It Exist Anyway?” Test

Before any outreach, ask: would this mention exist if AI assistants did not? Legitimate presence passes that test.

  • Video: A real walkthrough of how your product solves a specific problem, built for customers who search for that problem.
  • Reviews: A steady process for asking happy customers, with replies to criticism.
  • Press and expert quotes: Original data or hard-won experience that a journalist can use. Sarkar SEO advises clients to publish one concrete, checkable finding per quarter, not a monthly press release.
  • Community: Transparent participation. Use your real name, disclose your affiliation, answer the question asked and skip the pitch. Where moderators ban promotion, respect it.
  • Reference sources: Do not write your own Wikipedia entry. Earn independent coverage that an editor could cite.

Keep the Facts Consistent

An assistant combining your website, a review page and a press article will repeat contradictions. Align your name, founding date, offerings, pricing language and leadership across every profile you control. Correct third-party errors by contacting the publisher, not by arguing in comment threads.

What We Still Don’t Know

No study cited here shows that publishing in a specific community causes an assistant to name you. Citation lists change monthly, and ranking-only data hides how much weight each source carries. Treat the source map as a hypothesis to retest each quarter.
