AI SEO Beyond Your Website: How AI Engines Decide Who You Are

AI SEO Beyond Your Website: How AI Engines Decide Who You Are

3 min read

Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google’s AI Overviews to recommend a provider in your field, and the answer rarely comes from one page. It is stitched together from many sources, most of which you do not own. That changes the job. AI SEO is no longer only about optimizing your own pages; it is about shaping the evidence the web holds about you. This article explains which off-site signals appear to matter, where AI engines actually pull citations from, and how to audit your own footprint.

Your Website Is Only Half the Evidence

In a May 2025 study of 75,000 brands, Ahrefs compared many metrics against how often brands were mentioned in Google AI Overviews. Branded web mentions showed the strongest correlation (0.664), followed by branded anchor text in links (0.527) and branded search volume (0.392). Classic link metrics were weaker: domain rating at 0.326 and raw backlinks at just 0.218. Brands in the top quartile for web mentions averaged 169 AI Overview mentions, against 14 for the next quartile down.

Treat that carefully. The authors stress correlation is not causation, the sample was limited to stronger domains and higher-volume keywords, and Ahrefs sells the tools behind the data. Still, the pattern is useful: being talked about consistently appears to travel with being surfaced.

Where AI Engines Actually Look

Peec analyzed 30 million cited sources across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews in the US. For March 2026, its top ten most-cited domains were:

Peec also notes that rankings differ by engine, and that industry-specific sites can outrank Reddit in some sectors, such as Booking.com and Airbnb for hotels. The practical lesson is that how an AI describes your business may depend on a discussion thread, a review profile or a video you never wrote.

The Brand Footprint Audit

Sarkar SEO frames off-site AI SEO as an audit you can run in an afternoon. This is a working method, not a proven formula.

  1. List 15 questions a buyer would ask before choosing a provider like you, including comparison and “best for” phrasing.
  2. Run each question in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google. Log every domain cited, and note whether you are named.
  3. Sort the cited domains into four groups: owned (your site), earned (press, blogs), community (forums, social, video) and review platforms.
  4. Find the gaps. Which domains appear repeatedly in your category while your brand is absent, outdated or described wrongly?
  5. Check consistency. Compare how each profile states your name, services, location and positioning. Contradictions give a model conflicting material to summarize.

Repeat the run, since AI outputs vary between attempts. Look for domains that recur across questions and engines; those are your priorities, not one-off appearances.

A Hypothetical Walkthrough

Imagine a project-management software firm running the audit. Its fifteen questions return G2, Reddit and two YouTube comparison videos again and again, yet its G2 profile lists an old product name and shows no recent reviews. The fix is concrete: correct the profile, invite real customers to review, and publish a video walkthrough. This is an illustration, not a client result, but it shows how Sarkar SEO would turn audit findings into a short, ordered task list.

Freshness: Update With Substance

Ahrefs analyzed about 17 million cited URLs from seven AI platforms and Google organic results in July 2025. Pages cited by AI assistants were about 25.7% newer by publication date than organic results, averaging roughly 2.9 years old versus 3.9. ChatGPT showed the strongest lean toward newer content, while AI Overviews cited slightly older pages than organic results did.

The caveats matter. The study is correlational, publication dates reflect when Ahrefs’ crawler first saw a page, and the author notes that changing dates without changing content is discouraged by Google. Sarkar SEO’s reading: refresh a page when the facts have changed, and publish something new when you have something new to say. A cosmetic date edit adds nothing a model can use.

Earn Mentions Without Manufacturing Them

Mentions you cannot control are the point, so the work is giving people reasons to mention you accurately.

  • Publish something citable. An original survey, benchmark or dataset gives writers a reason to name you.
  • Offer expert commentary to publications and newsletters in your niche, with a clear name, role and company line.
  • Take part genuinely in communities where your buyers ask questions. Answer with substance and disclose your affiliation.
  • Use video for explanations. YouTube ranks second in the Peec data, and a transcript makes the content readable to machines.
  • Claim and complete profiles on review and professional platforms that your audit shows engines cite.

Avoid fake reviews, planted forum posts and undisclosed promotion. Platforms moderate these, and engines that synthesize across several sources may surface the contradictions. That is editorial judgment rather than measured fact, but the downside is lopsided.

What to Do This Month

Run the audit before spending anything. If three or four domains dominate your category’s citations, build presence there first. If your brand description varies from profile to profile, fix that before chasing new mentions. Then make your own site the clearest, most current source of those same facts, because it is the one place you fully control.
