Google has released a third product review algorithm update in search results, which builds on the previous product review algorithm changes.
In April 2021, the first product review algorithm upgrade went live, with the goal of rewarding content based on first-hand research. In December, there was a second product review update.
Google’s efforts to highlight higher-quality product reviews in search results are continuing with today’s update.
“ We’re launching another update that builds on that work to enhance our ability to identify high-quality product reviews. This will make it easier for us to get sound purchasing advice in front of users, and to reward creators who are earnest in being helpful.”
Google has heard time and time again from users that they want extensive reviews with evidence of products that have been tested. Based on that input and internal testing and evaluation procedures, Google has altered how Search ranks product reviews to prioritize in-depth and authentic content throughout the last year.
The update will take several weeks to roll out, according to Google, and it is expected to have an impact on the ranking of English-language product reviews across “many” sites.
Google has issued new guidelines for writing product reviews.
With the release of the March 2022 product algorithm update, Google has released new guidelines for writing reviews that fulfill the search engine’s quality standards.
When writing product reviews, Google suggests that you meet the following criteria:
- Include useful in-depth data, such as a product’s benefits or cons, as well as insights on how a product works or how it varies from earlier versions.
- Come from people who have used the products and can demonstrate what the product looks like or how it is used.
- Include information that isn’t provided by the vendor, such as graphics, audio, or links to other resources that detail the reviewer’s experience.
- Compare and contrast products, or explain how a product differs from its competitors.
Google confirms the product review updates do apply to ranked lists and comparison reviews.
“Yes. Product review updates apply to all forms of review content. The best practices we’ve shared also apply. However, due to the shorter nature of ranked lists, you may want to demonstrate expertise and reinforce authenticity more concisely. Citing pertinent results and including original images from tests you performed with the product can be good ways to do this.”
Google’s efforts to improve product reviews will continue, including expanding these updates to more languages beyond English. Ultimately, their goal is to help people find trustworthy, reliable advice when they come to Search — no matter what they’re looking for.
