Google clarified the new authorship-related requirements for both structured data types in their updated forum and Q&A structured data documentation.
Regarding the forum structured data, two new recommended properties have been added for the author type (the new recommended property is related to authorship data), and the InteractionCounter schema.org data type has been clarified.
The alterations to the Q&A structured data involve integrating links to the author profiles for individuals posing questions, providing answers, or engaging in discussions on those questions.
These modifications influence how Google processes information tied to users participating in forum discussions or Q&A formats.
This update is particularly intriguing because it underscores Google’s emphasis on identifying content creators, now within the realms of forums or Q&A pages.
Presently, search results displaying user-generated responses from forums lack author identification.
However, given Google’s increasing use of authorship cues, such as showcasing the names of news article authors, it remains to be seen whether the display of forum user names is under consideration or if Google plans to leverage author data differently behind the scenes.
New Authorship Requirements for Q&A Structured Data
Additionally, Google updated the Q&A (QAPage) structured data with Author signal-related requirements.
Pages with questions and answers and a variety of remarks that aren’t questions or answers are known as Q&A pages.
Publishers are required by the updates to the Q&A pages structured data to include links identifying the authors.
Three Changes in Authorship Association
Question Authors:
The alteration involves attributing authors to questions. The Question structured data type specifically pertains to the individual initiating the discussion, essentially the initiator of the thread. This requirement relates explicitly to the authorship of the question itself.
Answer Authors:
This pertains to authorship within the Answer Schema.org structured data type. This data type comprises two fundamental properties: the suggested Answer and accepted Answer properties, which denote guided answers and the officially acknowledged response, respectively, encompassing two distinct kinds of answers. This change focuses on associating authors with these types of answers.
Comment Authors:
The Comment type, an optional structured data component, delineates explanations provided by the questioner or discussions that don’t necessarily qualify as direct answers—such as responders seeking clarification. This modification centers on attributing authors to these comments.
InteractionCounter Structured Data Type
The InteractionCounter structured data type within Schema.org forms a critical segment of structured data code. In Schema.org terminology, a Property is a descriptor for this structured data Type, denoting its attributes.
The InteractionCounter Schema.org structured data type precisely conveys the frequency of author interactions to Google. This holds significance due to its requisite structured data properties, making their utilization imperative for eligibility in Google Perspectives and other search results showcasing rich results.
Previously, Google’s forum documentation on the InteractionCounter “type” lacked clarity, offering only definitions for two associated “properties” without contextual examples of their usage within that data Type.
Google has now enhanced this section, clarifying the importance and utility of employing the InteractionCounter type to document various author interactions more explicitly.
Author.URL Property’s Crucial Role in Google Search Results
Another significant change to the Forum structured data guidance is adding the Author.url Property of the Comment structured data Type. This change is also essential because it’s a required property that affects eligibility for the associated forum-related rich results in Google search.
