In Search of Excellence: Google Gemini Under Trial

2 min read

Google unveiled Gemini, a versatile multimodal large language model, confirming its integration into Search and Ads in the upcoming year.

Gemini’s Role in Search: The introduction of Gemini to Search, Ads, and various other Google products is scheduled in the coming months. Notably, Google Search is currently conducting trials with Gemini. This integration has notably slashed the response latency of Search Generative Experience by 40% for English users in the U.S. Additionally; Google highlighted other undisclosed quality enhancements resulting from Gemini’s implementation.

How will Gemini transform Search?

Platformer asked Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai and DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis this. Google, sticking to its pattern, remained somewhat ambiguous and primarily focused on SGE (Search Generative Experience), which might hint at specific insights:

Question: With Gemini set to enter search next year, how do you foresee it impacting the search experience?

Pichai: We’re actively testing Gemini within the search generative experience, and as we explore its potential, we’re witnessing widespread enhancements. Gemini serves as a foundational model that will permeate all our products. Search integration aligns with this vision.

The challenge in search has been amplifying multimodal capabilities, and currently, significant effort is invested in achieving this. Gemini, as a foundational model, inherently offers this capability. This presents an opportunity for innovation in this space.

Could Gemini in search eventually lead to increased instances of finding needed information directly on the results page without visiting websites?

Pichai: Our core belief is that people turn to search to embrace the richness and diversity of the web and its content ecosystem. While the search generative experience expands our capabilities, our product design aims to encourage exploration. Users crave this experience. It’s an inherent value proposition of search that remains our focus in evolving the product.

What is Google Gemini

Google Gemini, also known officially as Gemini 1.0, represents a sizable language model designed to process diverse forms of information, spanning text, images, audio, video, and code. Positioned as a rival to OpenAI’s GPT model, Google introduced three variations of Gemini:

  1. Ultra: Tailored for intricate and demanding tasks.
  2. Pro: Identified as Google’s most high-performing model, versatile across various tasks.
  3. Nano: Geared towards on-device operations, particularly suited for Android phones like Pixel.

Incorporating Gemini into Bard, Google has upgraded Bard by integrating a fine-tuned version of Gemini Pro. This enhancement grants Bard heightened capabilities in reasoning, planning, and comprehension. Described as Bard’s most substantial upgrade since its inception, it’s now accessible in English across more than 170 countries, with plans for further expansion shortly.

Google also announced Bard Advanced, a new iteration fueled by Gemini Ultra, slated for an early release next year. However, specifics regarding the cost or pricing structure for Bard Advanced remain undisclosed.

Additionally, Google DeepMind presented findings indicating Gemini’s outperformance of GPT-3.5 across six out of eight industry benchmarks. While OpenAI introduced GPT-4 in March, Google’s Gemini emerged as a promising contender in this evolving landscape of language models.

Significance of Gemini’s Emergence

Why it Matters: While undergoing trials in Search, Google has verified that Gemini will soon be integrated into the Google Search framework. Furthermore, if you’ve relied on ChatGPT for your daily tasks, exploring Bard’s enhanced capabilities might intrigue you. It’s worth comparing Bard’s performance against the free version of ChatGPT, driven by GPT-3.5, to assess its potential enhancements.
