Last Opportunity to Save Your Google Notes Search Data

1 min read

Google has updated the documentation for the Google Labs Google Notes experiment to remind users that Notes will be discontinued at the end of July 2024. The update includes detailed instructions on how to download notes content, emphasizing that data retrieval will be impossible after the final deadline.

Google Notes

Google Notes is an experimental feature in Google Labs that allows users to annotate search results with their ideas and experiences. The goal is to make search more helpful and enhance the quality of search results through the opinions and insights of real people, similar to how the public curates Wikipedia. After thorough testing, Google decided to discontinue the Notes feature, with the announcement made in April 2024.

Update To Documentation

The official documentation has been updated to clarify that the Notes feature will shut down at the end of July. Users who wish to download their data can do so using Google Takeout, a Google Accounts feature that allows users to export their content. Google Takeout enables Google Account holders to export data from various services, including Google Calendar, Google Drive, and Google Photos, among up to 56 types of content.

Google’s Search Central document changelog explains:

A Note About Notes

What: Added a note about the status of Notes to the Notes documentation.

Why: Notes is winding down at the end of July 2024.

Here is the new announcement:

“Notes is winding down at the end of July 2024. If you created a note, the content of your note is available to download using Google Takeout through the end of August 2024.”
