Technical SEO’s Endurance: Insights from Google’s John Mueller

1 min read

John Mueller of Google asserts that the relevance of technical SEO remains intact despite ongoing debates within the SEO community about its importance. Google emphasizes that technical aspects remain pivotal, even in light of ranking system documentation updates.

Google’s Search Advocate, John Mueller, recently reaffirmed the enduring significance of technical SEO, contradicting assertions that it is diminishing in importance. His remarks were prompted by a comment on X, previously known as Twitter, suggesting that technical SEO is losing relevance.

The Controversy Surrounding Technical SEO

In a noteworthy exchange, Mueller weighed in on X, responding to Yiğit Konur’s assertion that “Technical SEO is steadily losing its importance.” Konur argued that numerous misconceptions surround technical SEO, and some needlessly overcomplicate it. He emphasized that unless significant technical issues arise, the emphasis should shift toward generating and enhancing high-quality content.
This discussion was ignited by a brief video from the Google Search Central account, which delved into the topic of website redirects. However, it sheds light on a broader conversation within the SEO community that has gained momentum in the wake of Google’s recent updates to its ranking systems documentation.

The Role of Technical SEO in Google’s Ranking Framework

In April, Google adjusted its ranking systems documentation, which involved the removal of technical SEO factors such as HTTPS and Core Web Vitals. Google was swift to clarify the continued significance of these elements.
Google Search Liaison Danny Sullivan provided clarification during this period:
“It does not imply that page experience is now ‘obsolete,’ or that considerations like Core Web Vitals or mobile-friendliness should be disregarded—quite the opposite. To achieve success within Google Search’s core ranking systems, these elements and other aspects of page experience should be considered.
Sullivan went on to elucidate the distinction between “systems” and “signals” in the context of ranking, underscoring that the update involved moving certain page experience elements from the “systems” category to the “signals” category.
This change did not imply that these elements were no longer relevant but rather that they functioned as signals within other systems.

The Ongoing Significance of Technical SEO

Mueller’s recent statement emphasizes that technical SEO is still crucial in determining a website’s success.
Amid the ever-changing dynamics of the SEO community, Mueller’s declaration underscores that technical SEO remains the cornerstone of all web developments in the open online sphere.
