Understanding the Timeline of SEO Success: What to Expect

3 min read

When it comes to SEO, many individuals focus on rankings, and securing the top spot for keywords hinges on numerous factors, making it challenging to control. However, if you’re investing time and resources into SEO, the expectation is usually an increase in traffic, mainly organic traffic.

At least, that’s the hope.

Let’s delve into the data to ascertain the timeframe required to observe results from SEO efforts.

Insights from Organic Search Data

Within our purview, we monitor over 100 million domains from an SEO standpoint.

Out of this vast number, over 1 million domains have granted us direct access to their analytics.

Among these 1 million sites, our software indicates that 42,391 actively prioritize their SEO efforts. By “actively focusing,” we mean they consistently release new content monthly, optimize their code, expand their backlink portfolio, and refine load times, among other strategies—all geared towards boosting organic search traffic.

Let’s examine the trajectory of their traffic:

  1. There was an 11.4% upsurge in organic search traffic in the initial six months.
  2. Subsequently, in the following 6 months, there was a 9.58% increase compared to the preceding period.
  3. Over the second year, there was an average 49.4% escalation over the first year.
  4. Year 3 witnessed a 30.7% augmentation over the second year.
  5. Finally, in year 4, there was an additional growth of 13.5%.

These insights shed light on the progressive growth trends observed among domains actively engaging in SEO strategies.

We need more data beyond year 4, and pinpointing the exact initiation of a site’s SEO endeavors poses challenges, rendering the analysis imperfect. Nonetheless, it provides a solid understanding of the anticipated growth trajectory.

It’s important to note that this data represents averages and may not reflect individual site experiences due to significant outliers.

For curiosity’s sake, we delved into the outliers—the top 1%—comprising sites that experienced rapid growth and maintained a baseline visitor count of at least 10,000 organic visitors monthly.

Technically, it wasn’t precisely 1% of the 42,391 sites surveyed. Instead, only 138 sites met the criteria of garnering at least 10,000 organic visitors monthly and sustaining a growth rate of at least 50% annually over the entire 4-year period.

Here are the five most prevalent traits we observed in their SEO strategies:

Trait #1: Emphasis on Content Freshness

While the emphasis often lies on content creation, maintaining the freshness of content is equally crucial. Indeed, new content aids in Google rankings, yet the upkeep of existing content holds significant importance.

Consider this: Would you opt for an article that’s a week old or five years old? You’dlikelyr updated, current content over stagnant material.

Trait #2: Emphasis on Brand Building

While replicating brands like Nike may seem daunting, any effort toward brand building is valuable.

These sites capitalize on omni-channel marketing, leveraging social media, email marketing, and occasionally paid advertising.

They gradually cultivate a brand presence by embodying versatility and offering quality products or services.

Search engines (and even social platforms) prioritize ranking brands, recognizing their credibility in mitigating the spread of misinformation.

Trait #3: Capitalizing on Trends

A striking similarity among the 138 standout sites (1% subset) was their ability to experience surges in organic traffic.

They witnessed significantly higher traffic volumes in certain months, often unrelated to algorithm updates but rather attributable to trending topics. These sites adeptly rode the waves of trends to amplify their search traffic.

Seizing trending topics within their niche was easy for them.

For instance, while a dentist delving into politics is off-topic, a tech blog covering Apple’s latest releases is highly relevant.

Leveraging trends within one’s domain presents an excellent opportunity to boost traffic.

Trait 4: Swift Load Times

Faster load times unequivocally correlate with increased search traffic. You can readily assess your site’s load time by entering its URL here to obtain pertinent data.

Trait 5: Expansive TAM (Total Addressable Market)

TAM, or the total addressable market, encompasses the potential audience for your products, services, or content.

The adage “the riches are in the niches” often circulates in marketing. However, this notion only sometimes holds. More significant sites typically target broad markets, appealing to many people or companies.

The rationale is simple: the more individuals interested in your chosen category, the greater the potential for traffic.

Yet, exercising caution with TAM is imperative. A sizable audience doesn’t guarantee increased revenue.

Conclusion: The Path to SEO Success

The data above underscores a simple truth: investing sufficient time in SEO yields substantial traffic gains.

However, the data needs to address the plight of those who fail to achieve desired results.

The primary reason for a site’s underperformance often boils down to inconsistency and impatience.

SEO demands significant effort, but the return on investment is undeniable. Patience, perseverance, and consistency are essential to long-term success.
