Google Refines Page Experience Guidelines for Enhanced Ranking Insights

1 min read

Google has updated its page experience assistance documentation to clarify how Core Web Vitals metrics influence ranking signals. In the revised ranking section, Google emphasizes the significance of Core Web Vitals in its ranking systems, advising site owners to prioritize achieving favorable scores for success in Search and overall user satisfaction. However, Google cautions against optimizing only Core Web Vitals scores for SEO purposes, suggesting that broader enhancements to page experience are essential.

Previously, the documentation acknowledged various aspects of page experience without explicitly stating their role in ranking. While these factors may not directly impact rankings, they generally correlate with search success and warrant attention from site owners.

Additionally, Google emphasizes that beyond Core Web Vitals, other page experience elements do not directly contribute to higher search rankings. Nevertheless, optimizing these aspects can enhance user satisfaction, aligning with Google’s objective of rewarding sites that prioritize a positive user experience.

The updated documentation underscores Google’s commitment to transparency regarding ranking signals and encourages site owners to focus on holistic improvements to page experience rather than solely fixating on individual metrics.

Updated Core Web Vitals: As announced earlier, the new Interactive Narrative Processing (INP) metric has replaced First Input Delay (FID) as a core component of Core Web Vitals. However, it’s important to note that these metrics carry relatively low weight in ranking considerations. Therefore, prioritizing your SEO efforts elsewhere may be more beneficial before focusing extensively on Core Web Vitals.

Why it matters: Several months ago, Google clarified that while page experience is not a ranking “system,” it still serves as a ranking “signal.” This distinction, reiterated by Danny Sullivan, Google’s Search Liaison, aims to address previous confusion. The updated documentation aims to provide clarity on this matter.
